Cecil William Buckley VC

Cecil William Buckley was 24 years old and a junior lieutenant in The Royal Navy during The Crimean War.On the 29th of May 1855 in The Sea of Azov,Buckley ,during hostilities landed in the town of Genitchi with Lieutenant Hugh Burgoyne and John Roberts gunner, volunteered to land alone at a beech where the Enemy army was in strength. With stealth and caution and out of reach of the protection of their own ships they crept to the enemies ammunition dumps and corn stores which they set alight. While returning they were besett by Cossacks who cut of their retreat, but after substantial perils they gained their boat and this enabled them to return to their boat. Cecil William Buckley also rendered similar services at Taganrog, which town was occupied by three thousand enemy troops.Buckley was accompanied in this desperate mission by Henry Cooper,Boatswain and also volunteers who manned the boat.Buckley and Cooper repeatedly landed and fired different stores and goverment buildings, despite being under enemy fire and allaying attempts to capture them they managed to return to their ship, the Miranda, havingrendered eminent service to the fleet. Hugh Talbot Burgoyne, senior Lieutenant of the Swallows,John Roberts and Henry Cooper,Boatswain, were also all decorated with the Victoria Cross for their parts in the affair.

I think this an excellent idea and the way of telling in a narrative way is very enticing for these bold and brave endeavours, but as yet you have only done semen from the Crimean War,the Russians a great nation were the foe, such a war an awful war with pestulants and dreadful disease and the wounded allowed to die in their own mess untill Florence nightingale came. But that was the soldiers saga as yet you have just written of seamen.
Hopefully the Victorias Cross helped his wounds heal ok in the end.
I came across this unexpectedly and it really is an interesting site, with your grandfathers letters and also the interesting in people other than your own lieage.I look forward to reading more.
The crimean War was a terrible time but Joseph Trewavas seems to have accorded himself well as a younger able seaman of merely 19 years old equipping himsel with dastardly couage. What an amazing life, there is little real adventure now with all our machines and constant surveyance and broadcasting, but these quys what wont one give forsuch a life,a life of tremendous interest and comradship and on the ocean waves too !
Cecil William Buckley only 24 years old and already a junior lieutenant in The Crimean War.Again a great adventure, again a different age and a worthy narrative brought alive by a good narrative style.
Cecil William Buckley seems very young at just 24 to have engaged on such an incredible enterprise.Imagine how he must have felt to have become one of the first recipients of the Victoria Cross.I wonder if it was presented by Queen Victoria herself,I wonder what she said to him if Prince Albert was with her.It must have been an extraordinary occasion. It feels incredible to read about it solong after and in such a vibrant narrative way.
Cecil William Buckley was another brave soul from a by gone age,but his memorial lives on.
